With Health Canada as a major partner, the Centre des Premières Nations Nikanite proposed, from 2008 to 2014, the Health Careers Camps to French speaking First Nations high-school students. These Camps were geared towards different health careers in the form of scientific thematic workshops.
The overall goal of the camp is to encourage student retention by presenting the different university courses in fields related to health and accessible to First Nations students. To do so, a program composed of fun and interesting activities was offered to participants, while integrating concepts of a healthy lifestyle and the benefits of a healthy diet.
The week of activities includes visits, workshops on different themes, laboratory experiments, meetings with UQAC researchers, and sports activities led by qualified instructors in a safe environment.
To diversify the camp activities and thus, allow students to return with renewed interests, the program is changed and enriched from one year to another.
Since 1995, more than five hundred and fifty (550) high school students of First Nations participated in the summer camp offered by the Centre des Premières Nations Nikanite.
